Field Cancerization of Breast and Prostate Tissues: Clinical
Implications |
| The term "field cancerization" or "field effect"
relates to the fact that tissues adjacent to solid tumors, although histologically normal,
are often genetically altered. Such tissues are viewed by classical pathology as "normal"
and usually left behind or untreated. It is hypothesized that such tissues can give
rise to local recurrences and false diagnoses. On the other hand, cancerized tissue can
serve as a rich source for biomarker discovery. These clinical implications, and methods
to address them, will be discussed for breast and prostate cancer. |
| Dr. Bisoffi is currently an Assistant Professor at
UNM's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and is a member of the Cancer Research
and Treatment Center at UNM's School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular
Parasitology at the University of Basel, Switzerland, in 1995. |
