Course Outline.

This course is geared towards the beginning 3 Cushion player. It reviews proper mechanics as well as executing shots with follow, draw, and english. An overview of various 3 Cushion shots preceeds a survey of diamond systems for lining up shots. Practice of some system shots comes next. Safety play and position play will also be discussed. Most of the class time will be spent on doing exercises to improve the player's accuracy and reinforce the various techniques used for lining up shots, hence attendance is required (more than five absences will normally result in a failing grade).

  1.   - Introduction to course material and requirements. Then a review of Accepted / Preferred techniques: hand bridge, stance, grip, mechanical bridge, stroke, other useful bridges.
  2.   - Review of english, tangent-, follow-, and draw- caroms.
  3.   - Practice of basic caroms (controlling direction of cue off of first object ball).
  4.   - The 3 Cushion break shot.
  5.   - Introduction and practice on 3 Cushion "key shots".
  6.   - Continue practice of key shots.
  7.   - Examples of 3 Cushion shots from tournament play.
  8.   - The "Corner 5" system.
  9.   - Practice of the "Corner 5" and allowances.
  10.   - A system for doubling the long rail.
  11.   - The "Plus Two" system.
  12.   - Drop-in shots.
  13.   - Cross table shots - I.
  14.   - Cross table shots - II.
  15.   - First written test.
  16.   - An artistic billiards exhibition.
  17.   - A four ball variation of 3 Cushion billiards.
  18.   - Short table shots.
  19.   - Flat shots.
  20.   - Spin shots.
  21.   - Practice time.
  22.   - More examples of 3 Cushion shots from tournament play.
  23.   - Discussion of safety and position play.
  24.   - Playing position in 3 Cushion billiards.
  25.   - Type I position.
  26.   - Type II position.
  27.   - Type III position.
  28.   - Type IV position.
  29.   - Type V position.
  30.   - Second written test.
  31.   - Closing discussion.

Material will be derived from Billiards As It Should Be Played by Willie Hoppe, The Billiards Atlas series , and Three Cushion Position Play by Eddie Robins. Additional material can be found in the books by Robert Byrne which are on reserve in the Tech Library.

There is a $10.00 lab fee for this course.
