Old business:
1. 49ers float: The final float idea was to put someone in a BCC cage with
a computer portraying a materials student working all night to fit the theme
"Miners do it in the dark, but materials engineers do it all night long." Ryan
volunteered to be inside. Graham and Kyra (sp?) volunteered a flat bed and a truck
to pull the float. Margit also has barbed wire to donate. A sign-up sheet will be
put up on the Materials Society bulletin board (turn left when you enter Jones
through the front doors) so that volunteers can sign up to help.
2. 49ers jackhammer event: Scott and Shannon are donating their 1000-lb
blocks of concrete to help the club make money. We will be charging people to use
the jackhammer to try and get the samples in the center out. A sign-up sheet will
be put up on the Materials Society bulletin board so that volunteers can sign up
to help.
3. 49ers cookoff event: The Materials Society is challenging other clubs
to a cookoff. It will happen if there is enough interest from other clubs and our
members, so sign up to volunteer your time.
4. Rio Grande Symposium: This happens on Monday, October 27th, and there
will be a carpool. Please sign the carpool sheet on the Materials Society bulletin
board.
5. Sandia nanocrystal tour: Ryan is checking into this and there is a
sign-up sheet on the Materials Society bulletin board for those who are interested.
6. Shape memory alloy: There will be a meeting on Thursday, October 8th at
11 am in Jones 175 for those who are interested in making Christmas patterns and
shapes.
7. Carpet: The carpet workday was successful and the lounge looks great.
8. Dinners: Only three people are interested in the periodic dinners.
Whether this will happen again is questionable.
New Business:
1. Wal Colmonoy tour: Dr. Hirschfeld has invited the Materials Society
to join her and her senior design student on a tour of Wal Colmonoy metal powder
manufacturing facility in Las Lunas, NM. There will be a sign-up sheet on the
Materials Society bulletin board for those interested. Please show your interest
as soon as possible so that the tour date can be set.
2. Announcement: Dr. Burleigh pointed out that non-materials students
were sanding the walls in downstairs Jones. Teri said that Physical Plant plans
to rid the walls of the yellow wallpaper and to paint it all white and the doors
and trim blue.
Meeting adjourned at 12:56 pm.
