Service Projects
Habitat for Humanity
ASCE @ NMT takes pride in building a positive reputation with our local community. We volunteer our time for Habitat for Humanity, both in Belen and Albuquerque. Our most resent Habitat for Humanity project was in Albuquerque on May 3rd.
Can-Struction
The club also participated in the Can-Struction service project at the 2008 RMRC. For this project, we collected as many can donations as possible and built a structure that fit the assigned theme, “Medieval”. After the competition all of the cans were donated to the Food Bank of the Rockies.

Student Steel Bridge Competition
ASCE @ NMT has been competing in the Steel Bridge Competition since2006. All three of the bridges we have entered since then have been a success. Our team’s most recent success was at the 2008 Rocky Mountain Regional Conference in Golden, Colorado. The team, which was led by Philip Heid, put hundreds of hours into the design, fabrication, and assembly of the bridge. In the end, the team came in 5th place overall and placed 1st in the deflection category with a total aggregate deflection of .4”. The team also placed 3rd in both the weight and construction speed categories. Overall the team was extremely pleased with the performance of the bridge and is already making plans for the coming year. For more information on current bridge activities check out the bridge team page.

Concrete Canoe Competition
The club is going to be taking on the concrete canoe competition as a new project next year. The canoe team has already come up with a preliminary concrete mix design that is considerably light and durable. In addition they have already started preparing a form for the canoe to be molded from. We are all looking forward to seeing the final product that the canoe team comes up with.

Field Trips
PCL Water Treatment Facility
The club took its’ second tour of PCL’s construction site in Albuquerque this past fall. The site sits on several acres of land and included the construction of at least a dozen facilities. The City of Albuquerque has already taken over operation of several of the facilities including the new operations center where all water movements in the city can be monitored and controlled. The club really enjoyed their first tour during the spring of 2007 and wished to take a second tour to view the sites progress. Many students were extremely surprised to see the amount of progress made in the few months site they had last been.
Hammond’s Candies
The club took a tour of the Hammond Candy factory in Colorado during their off time during the Rocky Mountain Regional Competition.
