The Sigma Xi Motto
"Companions in Zealous Research," from Greek words:
Σπουδον Ξυνονεσ (Spoudon Xynones).
Founded in 1886, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society is a non-profit membership society of nearly 75,000 scientists and engineers who were elected to the Society because of their research achievements or potential. Sigma Xi has more than 500 chapters at universities and colleges, government laboratories and industry research centers. In addition to publishing American Scientist, Sigma Xi awards grants annually to promising young researchers, holds forums on critical issues at the intersection of science and society and sponsors a variety of programs supporting honor in science and engineering, science education, science policy and the public understanding of science. -- www.sigmaxi.org
Sigma Xi is an honor society in which members are nominated by peers. Regular members are expected to have published their research in science or engineering. Student members have shown an aptitude for research. Sigma Xi is a multidisciplinary organization with a marvelous publication, The American Scientist. It has articles by scientists describing their work and where it fits into the universe. In keeping with the multidisciplinary character of Sigma Xi, the articles range from engineering to biology to chemistry. Since a multidisciplinary approach may be an important aspect of proposal writing The American Scientist may bring a new view to our research area. Tables of contents and some articles are found on the web.
The Mission of Sigma Xi: To honor scientific accomplishments, to encourage and to enhance the worldwide appreciation and support of original investigation in science and technology, and to foster worldwide a creative and dynamic interaction among science, technology, and society.
Sigma Xi dues are $55 for regular members (full or associate) and $20 for student members for the fiscal year 2003-2004. The initiation fee for new and promoted members is an additional $7.50. Local dues are an additional $5 for regular members and $2 for student members.
