For an IE5 system like yours, click Start, then Run, and type: regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll Reboot. If that doesn't do it, try launching the attached Reg file. -- James A. Eshelman [MS MVP / DTS] ### Not sure of your original problem, but here's a post from Alex Nichol that goes into more detail on images and deals w/ more than jpg's: For those having difficulty with 'Thumbnail' views. There are really two separate matters - one: seeing a 'preview' of JPG and similar files on the left of the pane, for a selected file; two: seeing all files in the folder as 'thumbnails' rather than as icons. Each requires that the association of the filetype concerned can access the proper software via a CLSID in the registry. Such an association has a 'primary' entry for the extension - eg HKCR\.jpg; which then often is re-directed to what I'll call a 'functional' entry - eg HKCR\jpegfile - by having its Default in the right pane set to that functional entry, where the associations of different extensions are brought together (eg .jpg and .jpeg). The Preview is obtained by a 'ShellEx' subkey in the primary entry, obtained by REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\ShellEx] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}] @="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}" This can also be set up more easily by running the line regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll For Thumbnail icons there is a different key, which gets set up in the functional part for an extension set up by, and to, IEXPLORE. If you associate the extension to a different application this is likely to take it to a different functional entry (eg HKCR\ACDC_JPG) and this CLSID becomes inaccessible, so the type's thumbnails don't work. It can however be duplicated into the primary entry with REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\CLSID] @="{25336920-03F9-11cf-8FD0-00AA00686F13}" (or into the functional one that is in use, but this going back to the start seems better to me). If this is done, and the properties of a folder have 'Enable thumbnail view' checked, then the View menu has 'Thumbnails' as well as the Icon types, and selecting that will display these graphics types as thumbnails - other types which are not supported will appear as normal icons in a frame. Note that the thumbnails are big (if they are to be of any use) and that generating the Thumbs.db database in the folder takes some time the first time it is accessed in this mode. Also the database is a large file - in my tests 3.5Mb for a folder with 126 .jpg files. This can also be done for .gif .jpeg .htm .html and .bmp (replacing the .jpg in the regedit lines above). It may not be necessary if the association is already to a functional type as set by IEXPLORE - eg HTMLFile. Note that it is quite separate from the old registry hack for .bmp - which will still work (with a much smaller icon size) if 'large icon', rather than 'thumbnail' view, is selected. There are also such CLSID entries in the keys for XBMFile pjpegfile and artfile, so presumably these also will thumbnail, and for AIFFile and AUFile, though I am not sure what a thumbnail of a sound file could be Hope this is of interest -- Alex Nichol Bournemouth, U.K. alexn@dial.pipex.com Lyle Snyder wrote in message <360133FA.70471204@ibm.net>... >I have read numerous posts about this issue and have tried the >suggestions to no avail.. Under VIEW FOLDER OPTIONS FILE TYPES setting EDIT and OPEN to the exact, same settings as files that DO show thumbnails doesn't work either. Neither does setting the folder checkbox "Enable Thumbnail View" How do I get it to show the thumbnails again? --kise.r@usa.net ### Thanks a lot to greybeard for asking the question and to Kendrick for answering.
