The table below lists 外来語 (gairaigo), foreign or loan words used in Japanese. These words have been taken from foreign languages, mostly English, but do not include 漢語 (kango), words of Chinese origin. Gairaigo are always written in katakana. Most words, of course, refer to things that originated in other cultures. ホテル (hotel) and レストラン (restaurant) are examples. Sometimes the loan words replace regular Japanese words as in ナチュラルミネラルウォーター (natural mineral water). The loan words may be shortened, as in ワープロ (wâpuro for word processor), or be more descriptive, as in オープンカー (open car for a convertible) or プラスドライバー (plus driver for Phillips screwdriver). Sometimes a loan word can be misleading because it does not come from English. Examples are バイキング which sounds like biking. However it is from the word Viking and means smorgasbord. Another example is シュークリーム which sounds like shoe cream. It means cream puff from the French expression chou a la creme.
