Especially the tripod mode is very nice when doing macro work. It is slow but when the AF locks it is spot on accurate. And it has never been so easy to focus exactly where you want so accurately (at least in my experience). With low contrast objects it may be better to focus manually which is very easy due to magnified live view. The hand held mode is not that practical and requires some time to get used to. It is still useful too but no substitute to the real thing. So I ended up using live view more than I would have guessed. But it is far from perfect still. --- Nikon D300/D200/D100 Subject Re: Strange...I kinda like Live View.... My only complaint is that they insist on dropping the mirror down before taking the exposure, so I only use LV to compose and focus, and then switch back over to MLU mode to take the actual exposure. Use tripod mode, and all the painful things your talking about will magically disappear... If it can entice folks who do not always want to use a viewfinder to buy a Nikon product, its a useful feature for Nikon to add. That doesn't mean its intended to be used by everyone. One of the reasons I strongly prefer using my DSLR over my P&S is that I want to use the viewfinder to see exactly what the sensor is "seeing." That Nikon was able to give me this, and also let me see it in the viewfinder is cool, if nothing else. I had D70 for three years, never thought I needed a live view mode. I had my D300 for 3 weeks before I even used Live View, and then it was just to check it out. Like others have said, I don't really know when handheld mode will be useful to me. It may be, but I just haven't used it enough to figure out why I wouldn't just use the viewfinder. But, I can definitely see how it will be useful out in the woods taking Macros on a tripod of small fungus on a forest floor--to ensure focusing, which is much harder to see out there than exposure. I can also test exposure with the histogram after taking the shot, adjust take it again, and all the while know I've at least got focusing and DOF exactly where I want it. That could be a huge improvement offered by Live View. --- http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1039&message=26105262 Nikon D300/D200/D100 Subject Re: What is Liveview & what are its benefits? Posted by Seeya [CLICK FOR PROFILE] Date/Time 5:08:52 PM, Thursday, December 20, 2007 (GMT) I feel that liveview will come in handy in something I've been wanting to dabble in, which is astrophotography. Prior to any liveview implementation, you would mount the camera on a telescope and your only way to focus in what's called a 'prime focus' arrangement is to adjust the focuser of the telescope while looking through the viewfinder of the camera. You could also, of course, take an image, view it on the lcd, and try to make adjustments as you see fit. Then take another image, view results, make adjustments, and repeat. Looking through the viewfinder and judging focus at night can be problematic. Liveview in tripod mode allows viewing real-time adjustments made to focusing, alignment, etc. without having to do it through the viewfinder, making this process a whole lot less of an effort. I for one find the current liveview implementation quite useful. Will it work for everyone? No, I'm sure not. If it doesn't, find something that will, and if you want to be helpful, post what you find in a constructive way. Don't make the camera look completely worthless because of it. Can it be improved to meet other's needs or to work better? Absolutely. I find a post calling a feature 'worthless' or saying 'it sucks' because it doesn't work perfectly for you or your application to be useless. Mike --- Nikon D300/D200/D100 Subject No issues with Live View... Posted by johnrg [CLICK FOR PROFILE] Date/Time 8:11:42 PM, Thursday, December 20, 2007 (GMT) Except for some noise. Handheld mode seems to work just fine. One press bring the image to screen and select focus area, half press till you see black and allow split second for focus and continue pressing fully to capture image. Trust the camera and hold it steady. Stabbing the shutter will cause issues so be smooth is all. This feature was nonexistant before. In certain scenarios it will be useful when you cannot use the viewfinder. For me not worth all the fuss. My D200 had no Live View. My Rolleiflex 6x6 shows my subject inverted....there is just too much good w the D300 to complain about this one feature. The focus is slow and requires you hold the AF button down for some seconds. But the focus is dead on. WHo cares about lag on a tripod shot? Ken Eis http://keneis.zenfolio.com
