The Socorro Branch of the AAUW cordially invites you to attend the AAUW-NM Fall Workshop. Our theme this year is Progress Toward Peace. Events to be held on campus at New Mexico Tech will include two speakers in the morning session. First will be an overview of the situation in the Middle East and commentary on Is Peace Possible? Following will be a presentation on The Homeland Security Approach to Anti-Terrorism. A presentation by Socorros own, well known sculptor Sharon Fullingim will accompany a buffet style luncheon of Baked Lemon Herb Chicken and Lasagna Bolognese. Sharon is the artist who created the life size sculpture in the Generations Plaza of Tamaya Resort. She will talk about her path as an artist and explain the creation of the sculpture. The afternoon will include an International AAUW presentation from Evelyn Cummings and Barbara Carey who attended the IAUW Conference in Perth, Australia. Then, you will have your choice of attending two breakout sessions on Computer Skills, Membership, and Potpouri. We will attend dinner at the historic Val Verde Hotel on Saturday evening, and the Leadership Team meeting will be held on Sunday morning. SOCORRO AAUW BRANCH TO HOST FALL WORKSHOP AT NEW MEXICO TECH SOCORRO - For only the second time in its 55-year history, the Socorro Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will host the AAUW-New Mexico Fall Workshop October 30-31. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30 in the lobby of New Mexico Tech's Macey Conference Center. The event is open to all AAUW members statewide, and any others interested in attending. Registration fee is $40, and includes a buffet lunch and continental breakfast. The Socorro Branch of AAUW held its first meeting in September, 1949, with 20 charter members, several of whom are still active within the organization. The local organization is known for its annual Christmas Home Tour, and for generous scholarships to female students at Socorro High School and New Mexico Tech. This year's Fall Workshop has an international focus, "Progress Toward Peace," which is appropriate because of the proximity of the workshop to the Nov. 2 Presidential election, said Nolina Bryant, workshop coordinator. Geraldine Klinglesmith, president of the Socorro Branch of AAUW, and state co-presidents Carol Ann Council and Nancy Scheer will welcome participants, followed by "Reflections on the Meeting in Perth, Australia" by Evelyn Cumming, AAUW regional director, and Barbara Carey, president of the Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund (VGIF). VGIF is an independent, international philanthropy with an international board of directors and membership. Its mission states, in part, that it "encourages understanding among women worldwide." The focus on international issues continues through the morning with two special talks. "Different people have different ideas about the political aspects of the peace process," said Bryant, a member of the Socorro Branch of AAUW and state membership co-chair of AAUW-New Mexico. As such, Bryant has invited two speakers to present their viewpoints on international issues: New Mexico Tech President Dr. Daniel H. López, and Dr. Michael Hensley, program manager of the International Law Enforcement Agency (ILEA)-Roswell, a program Tech manages for the U.S. Department of State. López, who has a Ph.D. in political science and is widely regarded as an authority on Middle East issues, will speak on "Is Peace Possible?" at 10 a.m. Saturday. López has served as president of New Mexico Tech since 1993, and has accrued innumerable honors for his work in government and as a leader in higher education. Hensley will speak on "Homeland Security and Anti-Terrorism" at 11 a.m. His Ed.D. is from Virginia Tech, and he has done post-doctoral studies at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. In addition to his role with ILEA, Hensley is involved in the new National Emergency Response Training Academy at Playas. Well-known Socorro artist Sharon Fullingim will reflect on her path to becoming an artist at a buffet-style luncheon beginning at noon in the Macey Center Galena Room. New Mexico's One Percent for the Arts project started a long list of larger-than-life commissions for the artist, including "Past, Present, and the Future," which graces the grounds of the New Mexico Tech campus; and four traditional Pueblo figures which adorn the courtyard at the exclusive Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort at Santa Ana Pueblo. Fullingim also recently finished creating another bronze monument for Santa Ana Pueblo, and is a co-owner of an art gallery Socorro. Beginning at 2 p.m., AAUW members will choose from several breakout sessions including a hands-on workshop on the basics of email taught by students in New Mexico Tech's Technical Communication (TC) program. Dr. Daniel Jernigan, an assistant professor in the TC program, and Joy Wheeler, Tech's webmaster, have volunteered their services to help coordinate the email workshop, Bryant said. Other sessions: "
Membership Challenge - "Ideas to Recruit and Retain Members"; " Workshop participants will dine at the historic Val Verde Hotel at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. A "Leadership Team Meeting" Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. will close out the workshop. Contact Bryant with questions, or for bed-and-breakfast reservations, at 505-835-5609; or visit the AAUW website at http://www.nmt.edu/~aauw/special_events.htm. -- NMT - (Valerie Kimble) |
