Changes for the August 2003 upgrade
|
|
Starting in early August 2003, the TCC has performed a series
of upgrades to the user and server systems as part of an effort
to bring new technologies and capabilities to users.
Here are some pages to explain and help you with the changes:
- Our modems were upgraded from 28.8kbps to 56kbps. Use
838-0335. The older modems are still available at 835-4543.
- Changes to e-mail service
- SpamAssassin: A program to filter out unwanted
spam e-mail.
- Using SSH (Secure SHell): Replaces telnet access,
which we no longer support.
- Changes for Web authors: Our Apache web server has been upgraded
and there are changes to the procedures for putting up Web pages.
- Workstations change to RedHat Linux: Our dual-boot workstations now run
Red Hat Linux.
- List of installed packages
- rainbow, our principal login server, has
much more speed and memory than the previous Sun server with this
name. See the Red Hat page for
information about operating system changes.
- You can change your password by typing the command
passwd. Type your old password, then type
the new one twice. This changes both Windows and Linux passwords.
Changing your password under Windows also changes your password
everywhere.
New equipment:
- A DVD copier that can make copies of CD-ROMs as well as
DVDs.
- A Nikon slide scanner that can scan 35mm slides or
unmounted 35mm, 120, or 220 film at up to 4000 dots per inch.
As always, our User Consultants will be glad to help you with
your problems. See the
User Consultant web page,
visit the Help Desk in Speare 5, or call 835-5437.
