Changes to e-mail service
|
|
Our mailhost mail server has been replaced with
a faster machine. For security reasons, your e-mail folder
will no longer be present in the /var/spool/mail/
directory.
We support these mail readers, which will all work with
the new mailhost:
- Eudora
- Microsoft Outlook (Make sure your server is set to
mailhost.nmt.edu and not just nmt.edu.)
Note: Beware! Some versions of Outlook have huge
security holes. Please see
Notes on Outlook security issues.
- Netscape
- Mozilla
- pine: Pine users will now have to supply their
user name and password when starting to read mail. This too
is a security measure.
- mutt
We support two external mail protocols, POP and IMAP. These
protocols are set up as preferences in your mail reader.
- The POP protocol downloads your incoming mail to your
system. If you use multiple computers or different
mail readers, the messages you see will depend upon which
computer or mail reader your are using.
- The IMAP protocol leaves the incoming mail on the mail server.
However, using IMAP can be slower.
If you would like to filter out spam (unsolicited e-mail),
see SpamAssassin.

Asked Questions (FAQ) page maintained by the User Consultants.
