Document Object Model example: address book

The purpose of the address book DTD is to replace your ``little black book'' of names, addresses, phone numbers, and such.

• Schemas for the address book document type in RNC (Relax NG Compact Format) and DTD (Document Type Definition formats.
• Notes on the software design
• An experimental, ad-hoc XSLT script that displays most of the data in Web form. It doesn't do two things that are difficult (or impossible?) to do in XSLT:
  • The entry appears only one place, where it appears in the input file.
  • Cross-references are not displayed at all.
• The addr-web.py Python script that renders the address.xml test file into either Web form or a 3"x5" printable form (in PDF format). This script uses a number of Python modules:
  • sysargs.py digests command line arguments.
  • foldifier.py is used to fold long lines in the generated HTML source.
  • gen_xml.py is my own package to generate XML documents with reasonable indentation.
  • address.py is a layer of Python objects that represent XML address files.
  • dom_helpers.py is a set of helper routines that perform common tasks for Python scripts that use the DOM.
  • fo_helpers.py is a set of helper routines for generating XSL-FO (flow objects) via gen_xml.py.
