What is a Unix command?

After you log in, you can type commands that tell Unix what you want to do. You should see a command prompt that looks something like this:

      yourname@yourcomputer<16>%

To understand how Unix commands work, you should understand:

• `What is a file?'
• `What is a stream?'
• `What is a process?'
• `Executing a process'
• `What is a command line argument?'
• `Redirecting output streams'
• `Redirecting input streams'
• `Using pipelines'
