Using standard Unix software tools

Once you master the fundamentals of Unix, there are several major software tools that can make life easier for you on Unix systems.

• If you are doing any work that requires frequent editing of any sort of text file, you may want to look at `What does a source code control system do?'
• If you are maintaining groups of files, and some files are built by an automatic process, take a look at the online documentation for Gnu make, or the man page for make.
• If you need privacy or secure transmission of files, see `Using PGP for privacy and encryption'
