8.3. How to make an online backup

Follow this procedure to make a backup stored online in the server. Either the admin user or a course's instructor can do this; however, there is a quota (currently 5) on the number of online backups per section.

  1. Login as admin and go to the Administration tab.

  2. Bring up the section or sections you want to back up. There are two ways to do this:

    • Use the Courses tab to browse the list of courses until your desired course is displayed. Then click on that course's title to bring up the desired section.

    • Use the Search function in the Administration panel: see Section 8.5, “Searching for a section”.

  3. If you want to back up only one section, find the line for the desired section and click on the ActionLinks icon. ActionLinks icon and select Back Up.

To back up multiple sections, select the checkboxes for the sections to be backed up, then click on the Back Up button.

To back up every section shown on the page, click the checkbox just to the left of the word Title at the top of the list. This will select all the sections. Then click the Back Up button.

  4. Assuming that the sections have not exceeded their quota limiting the number of backups, you will see the message “The following were added to the backup queue”: click the OK button.

However, if a section has already reached its quota of backups, you will see the message “The following have reached or exceeded the quota of online backups set by the administrator.” If you see this, for each such section, select one of these two radiobuttons for each section, then click Proceed:

    • If you decide not to back this section up after all, click its Skip backup radiobutton.

    • If you select the section's Delete oldest backup, the section will be backed up after the oldest backup has been deleted.

  5. Click OK.

Backups are not done instantly. They are queued for later execution. To find out which backups have been completed, start the restore procedure described in Section 9, “Restoring sections from backups”, and proceed until you see the list of available backups. The “Status” column will show “Completed” once the backup has finished.
