17.6. Adding a selection list column to the grade book

A selection list column is one that can contain only certain selected values.

For example, you might want to create a “Rank” column that contains a choice of Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Graduate, or Special.

Procedure 22. How to add a selection list column to the grade book

  1. This procedure starts on the Grade Book page. For instructions on navigating to this page, see Section 17, “Using the Grade Book tool”.

  2. Click on Create Column.

  3. In the drop-down menu that appears, click on Selection list.

  4. In the Column label field, enter the name of the column. This field is required.

  5. In the Alignment pull-down menu, select whether you want the values to appear aligned to the Left, Right, or Center of the field.

  6. If this column is involved in the computation of grades, click the checkbox labeled Grade-related column.

  7. If you want students to be able to see their value for this column, click the checkbox labeled Released to Student.

  8. Click Save. This returns you to the Grade Book page.

  9. ActionLinks icon. To set up the list of possible values in the new column, click the ActionLinks icon next to the title of the column.

  10. In the drop-down menu that appears, click on Edit Column Select List.

  11. In the field under the heading Item, enter the first choice.

  12. For each additional choice, click the Add Item button.

    • If none of the checkboxes for the choices are selected, the new item will be added at the end of the list.

    • If you want to add a new item somewhere else besides the end of the list, click the checkbox of one of the existing choices, and the Add Item button will add the new item before that selected choice.

  13. If you want to delete a choice, click on its 'Delete' icon. Delete icon.

  14. When you are happy with the set of choices, click on Save.

  15. ActionLinks icon. If you want to enter or modify values in this column of the gradebook, click on the ActionLinks icon of that column, and click on Edit Values in the drop-down menu that appears. In the page that appears, the Change to column will have a pull-down menu with your choices, plus “--” to indicate “none of the above.” Use these pull-downs to set or change the desired values.

  16. When you are happy with the values shown, click Save.
