Printing: The commands to the printer

Tech Computer Center logo

You type commands to the printer at the command known as a prompt, which looks something like this: <>$. (If your prompt does not look like this don't panic -- just go ahead.)

  1. Type lpr then a space. Do not press enter until Step 4! For example
    	<>$lpr
  2. Type -P followed by the name of the printer you want to use. For example
    	<>$lpr -Pspeare5
Notice the name of the printer is always in lower case letters.

  3. Type the complete name of the file. For example
    	<>$lpr -Pspeare5 homework.txt
    	<>$lpr -Pcolor poster.ps
  4. Press Enter.

A complete list of instructions can be found at the man page for lpr.
