Analyzing strings with Icon

Icon has a number of useful built-in functions for working with textual strings. Here are some of the more commonly used ones:

• To check whether the first character of a string is a particular character or type of character, see `Checking the first character of a string in Icon'.
• If you want to find all the characters of a given kind at the beginning of a string, see `Checking the initial characters of a string in Icon'.
• To see whether a string starts with a particular sequence of characters, see `Checking for an initial substring in Icon'.
• To locate the occurrences of some small string within a larger one, see `Scanning for a substring in Icon'.
