Selecting a programming language

• C and C++ are most commonly used for system programming.
• Python is a general-purpose language for rapid prototyping and systems programming.
• Java is used for embedded applications, particularly interactive Web pages.
• The Perl language is the "Swiss Army Chainsaw" of systems programming tools. (The author interprets this to mean that it does many things, none of them elegantly.)
• The Eiffel language is an object-oriented language of recent vintage.
• The Icon programming language is a general-purpose higher-level language.
• Lisp and Scheme are indispensable for serious students of programming.
• tcl and tk are tools for rapid prototyping of X-Window system applications.
• The awk language is a pattern scanning and processing language.
