The C programming language

The C language is defined in:

Kernighan, Brian W., and Dennis M. Ritchie. The C programming language. 2nd ed. Prentice Hall, 1988. ISBN 0131103628.

The preferred local compiler is the Gnu C Compiler. See the man page for gcc.
