Static web page policies at www.nmt.edu

There are only a few rules for hosting Web pages here at www.nmt.edu. These rules are there for the protection of authors and readers.

• You must have an account at the New Mexico Tech Computer Center to put up Web content on the www.nmt.edu server. See the TCC usage policies page for information on getting an account.
• All Web content must be in the public_html directory under your account's home directory. The URLs of pages in your structure will all start with

      http://www.nmt.edu/~login

  where login is your account name. For example, for a user named aloysius, all that user's page URLs will start with "http://www.nmt.edu/~aloysius/".
• No matter how it is created, a Web page is just another disk file, with a name that typically ends in .html. To continue the example above, if user aloysius has a file named mycats.html in directory public_html under his home directory, the URL of that page will be "http://www.nmt.edu/~aloysius/mycats.html".
  • From a Unix system, this file would have absolute path name "/u/aloysius/public_html/mycats.html".
  • On a Windows system, start at "'userhost' (U:)", and navigate down to subdirectory public_html.
• You can create subdirectories under your public_html directory. The URL of a file in a subdirectory consists of "http://www.nmt.edu/~login/" followed by the path name of that file relative to the public_html directory. For example, if aloysius creates a subdirectory ferrets under the public_html directory and creates a Web page in that directory named boo.html, that page's URL will be "http://www.nmt.edu/~aloysius/ferrets/boo.html".
• All directories and files must have the ``world read permission'' set. For Unix users, see `Controlling access to your files', especially the page on `Changing file permissions'. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to do this on Windows boxes. The author recommends that you learn just enough Unix to open an ssh connection to our rainbow server, log in under Unix, and fix your pages' permission problems that way.
