program
In general, a program is just a canned list of instructions. To ``run a program'' means to execute its list of instructions, to perform a set pattern of operations. A program can also be viewed as an entity that performs
processing
that transforms
input
data into
output
data. A simple program might do something like balance your checkbook or deal a duplicate bridge hand. At the other end of the scale, all of the large
software
packages
on a computer system are really just large programs and collections of programs.
