Every computer on the
Internet can be identified by one or more
domain names. A domain name consists of two
or more words separated by periods ("."), where
the last word is the most general and the first word is the
most specific.
Examples:
- The Web server at New Mexico Tech. The edu
part is common to all educational sites. The nmt
part is common to all sites at New Mexico Tech. The www
part identifies one particular machine.
- aol.com
- America OnLine is a commercial operation; com means
commercial, and aol refers to America OnLine.
