When you are told to type "control-something",
that means to press and hold the Control key while pressing
another character. For example, to form the "control-D"
character, press and hold the Control key, then press and
release the D key, then release the Control key. The carat
(^) symbol is often used to symbolize control
characters. For example, control-D may be written as "^D".
