Running the emacs tutorial

Tech Computer Center logo

The emacs text editor has an excellent online tutorial introduction. A half hour to an hour should be sufficient to give you a good command of the basic editing functions.

  1. Type this Unix command:
            % emacs
  2. Briefly press the ESC key;
  3. type the letter x;
  4. then type help with tutorial;
  5. and press the RETURN key.

Follow the instructions, and make a list of the functions that you think you are likely to use. The commonest commands are presented first, so if you get to functions that don't seem useful to you, you can probably stop without missing anything really important.
