Using database management software

If you need to manage large amounts of data that are organized more or less in a tabular form, database software can make your job easier.

• For major database applications, we recommend Oracle. The server is dbhost.nmt.edu, port 1521.

  If you are at New Mexico Tech, you can browse the online documentation available through the Information Services Division.

• The MySQL database system has fewer features than Oracle, but better performance. It is probably a better choice for small to medium Web applications because its first response is faster than Oracle. The server is dbhost.nmt.edu.
• The gdbm package is a small database system suitable for inclusion in programs you write yourself.
• We also have the Postgres database installed.
