6.7.   Things not to do while on duty

This is not an all-inclusive list by any means and while the items listed are representative the list as a whole is meant to give you an idea of what you shouldn't do at work. One reason behind some of the restrictions is to reduce the chance that the UC could be perceived as goofing off.   Another reason is that the TCC doesn't have enough money to pay people to not do work!

Some of the concerns behind this list include the concept that while you are at work you should be getting work done, others are based on the opinions which people will form of our operation based on their perceptions (which means we must be aware of what may drive their perceptions and adjust our behavior according to the image we want them to have of us).

Among the things not allowed while on duty:

Guard against extended conversations (roughly more than a minute or two) not related to helping someone use our resources.   This is one we continually need to guard against, especially around the Help Desk.   Too often I have fallen into conversations there and ended-up receiving dirty looks from some irate user(s), and I'm sure I'm not the only TCC employee this happens to.   Most of the looks are probably due to the conversation disrupting the person's concentration.   If you must have an extended conversation consider taking it to the hallway while staying in sight of the Help Desk.

Keep in mind the Help Desk area is a work area and is not for socializing.   Towards this end (as well as to keep the work space less cluttered) only TCC employees, or a user getting direct help, are allowed in the Help Desk area.
