6.9.   Noise level in the TCC

The TCC needs to be quiet enough for people to get their work done.   If you notice that a room is getting too loud, ask the people in the room if it is too loud and quiet the others down if necessary.   Don't wait for someone to come and tell you that other users are being too loud, because most people would rather suffer through it than complain.   As a User Consultant, you have the authority to make users of TCC resources quiet down or leave.   You should manage conversations at the Help Desk so they don't bother other people.

Your awareness of people's need for a quiet environment in which to work is needed.   Without it we can't maintain such an environment (and it is an environment we should be encouraging).   While maintaining “library quiet” may be impractical you should do what you can to keep distracting noises at a minimum.   (This has, at various times, been a hot topic and will in all likelihood become one again sometime if we don't pay attention to it.)   In particular be aware of the noise levels generated when talking around the Help Desk area, and know that most of the people in that room can probably hear enough of those conversations to be distracted.
