| Tartis Joins Chemical Engineering Faculty
Dr. Tartis holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from UC-Davis and
a BS in Chemical Engineering from New Mexico Tech. She has been an
NIH Fellow and is a past recipient of the New Mexico Tech Cramer Award
for the top-female engineering graduate.
“I am eager to return to the campus as a professor in Chemical
Engineering for many reasons." says Dr. Tartis, "First and
foremost, I believe that the unique atmosphere of NMT gives students
the opportunity to thrive. Additionally, the nature of a small university
such as NMT provides close research collaborations within the institute.”
“Dr. Tartis is a great addition to the university and the broader
statewide technical community.” says Dr. Don Weinkauf –
Chair of Chemical Engineering, “Along with her truly outstanding
research capabilities, Dr. Tartis brings a deep appreciation for the
student-centered nature of our program. Her success in the Biomedical
Engineering field will provide our students with a clearer understanding
of the range of careers accessible through Chemical Engineering.
Biomedical Engineering is a field that lies at the interface of Chemical
Engineering, Medicine, and Biology. Various institutions around the
State of New Mexico are responding to the ever increasing need to
satisfy human health concerns through Biomedical Engineering. The
National Laboratories (Sandia and Los Alamos), Lovelace, the University
of New Mexico, as well as other biomedical facilities in the region
are expanding. Chemical Engineers contribute valuable solutions to
the problems posed in the world of Biomedical Engineering, as well
as many other fields. NMT graduates in Chemical Engineering will find
themselves essential to the development and success of such State
and Regional programs. In addition to Dr. Tartis’ announcement, the Chemical Engineering program is in the process of hiring an additional faculty member who will join the program next fall. The Chemical Engineering program over the past 6 years has accounted for more than 18% of all BS engineering degrees awarded from New Mexico Tech. One out of every 15 undergraduates on campus is studying Chemical Engineering. The program is fully accredited by ABET-EAC.
