Chemical Engineering at New Mexico Tech!

Outside of class, we strongly encourage our students to become involved with the many research opportunities available to undergraduates on campus. New Mexico Tech is nationally renowned for its high quality Science & Engineering education. Each year, New Mexico Tech is included in the Princeton Review’s list of the Top 300 schools in the nation. Tech is the only university in New Mexico to be extended this honor. Tech is also consistently rated one of the best values among top schools in the country. Chemical Engineering is one of seven ABET accredited Engineering programs on campus. The demands of New Mexico Tech curriculum are high, but in return the rewards can be many.

The quality of the educational experience lies in our small class sizes, exceptional caliber of our students, and the personal attention provided by our experienced faculty. Our laboratory faciliites include a state-of-art data acquisition laboratory and a chemical process padsite equipped with industry-scale control equipment. Undergraduates are encouraged to become involved with the research efforts of our faculty as well as participate in the development of our laboratories. This experience is invaluable for helping our students guide their careers and develop skills that the workplace demands.

A unique and essential part of the educational experience at Tech is the ability to become involved with the research and development projects of the faculty and staff. There are many avenues to gain “hands on” experience while studying Chemical Engineering at Tech. The Chemical Engineering program is intimately tied to the Petroleum Recovery and Research Center (PRRC) located on campus. Presently, three of our faculty members also hold positions with the PRRC, enabling many of the Chemical Engineering students to become involved with their research. The Energetic Materials Research and Technical Center (EMRTC) with its focus on explosives research also supports many undergraduates as they pursue engineering degrees at Tech. At the same time, students gain experience in the Polymer Materials, Thin-Film Deposition, Fuel Cells, and Nano-scale Catalyst Groups within our department. During the summers, many students also find engineering positions within Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs as well as mining, oil&gas, semiconductor, and chemical companies throughout the state and nation.

The mission of our program is to engage and prepare students for professional careers which require command of the principles of Chemical Engineering.  We will focus on the development of complete engineers who can foster innovation through know-how and champion ideas through effective communication.  We will deliver a thorough education with insightful teaching, an innovative curriculum, research opportunities, summer job experiences, and channels for permanent, successful careers.  All of our efforts are done in the context of providing the human and technical resources critical to enhancing the vitality of the State of New Mexico and the people and businesses that thrive within this region.  Like our counterparts in industry, we recognize that achievement of our mission can only be accomplished by continual self-assessment and actions to improve.
