| Things To Do in Socorro Socorro is a haven for outdoor lovers. Numerous rock climbing and mountain biking areas are just minutes from campus. Socorro is also at the foot of the Magdalena Mountains and the Gila Wilderness Area which offers camping, hunting, fishing, trail running and other outdoor activities. Water Canyon, Spook Canyon, Box Canyon, San Lorenzo Canyon, and North and South Baldy Mountain are local favorites. A good site which describes many outdoor recreation activities in and around Socorro have been posted by our Earth Sciences program. Places Around Socorro: Elephant Butte - Elephant Butte, a statewide favorite, is a lake 60 miles south of Socorro that provides beaches for camping, swimming, fishing and boating. Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge - This refuge houses a wide variety of animals and unique birds. The refuge is a great place to visit anytime of year because each season offers its own unique sites. Guided tours are given year-round and it is located an hour west of Socorro. Some of the high pressure green tinted glass created by the nuclear blast (Trinitite) can still be seen. The site is located twenty-two miles southeast of Socorro. Tours are available twice a year.
